If I would have played Air Conflicts - Aces of World War II before I would have played Resistance Retribution I would have thought of the graphics as great. Well, after seeing what the PSP is capable of handling, I'm going to have to say that the graphics in this game are only good.
The airplanes are the best looking aspect to Air Conflicts; they are rendered beautifully and they are almost evenly divided in numbers between nations; Germany, Britain and Russia have three planes while the US has four. Another thing that looks impressive in the game are the backgrounds and the available landscape. Seeing the sunset over a snowy field while dodging anti-aircraft fire can be an interesting and exciting site to see.
The gunfire is not too shabby looking either and the trails of smoke that damaged planes leave behind looks amazing (considering the PSP's capabilities). Another impressive thing about the gunfire is the empty bullet shells being discharged as you fire your machine guns. The explosions don't look bad at all, but they are not my favorite either; I was a lot more impressed with the way explosions looked in Resistance Retribution. If I had to point my finger at something that I'm not too particularly impressed with, I would have to point out the water in this game. I have seen better water renderings on games over five years old; at least the programmers made it a pretty blue. In the game's defense though, there is only so much detail can one can put towards well rendered water.
As for the game's sound, depending on how you look at the game and what you expect out of it, can be classified as either a tragedy or a masterpiece. Personally, I am leaning towards the tragedy side and here's why. About the best part of the game's sound is found in the engine sounds. The engines sound incredible but in all reality, I'm having a hard time distinguishing individual plane sounds. The bombers seem to have a certain pitch to the engines while the fighters have another but unfortunately, it seems that all fighters sound the same regardless of the plane types; the same goes about the bombers. The sound effects are not great but they are not bad either. Explosions and gunfire sounds about standard to what explosions and gunfire sounds in other PSP games. If you're used to playing flight simulators on a PC, odds are that you will be a bit disappointed in the gunfire; unless my ears deceived me, regardless of the plane, all machinegun fire loads up the same sound file. Considering that the detail on a PSP can not compare with that of a PC, Xbox or PS3, I personally do not have a problem with the game's sound much. The only thing that actually bothers me is the complete lack of any voice acting. With the small size of the PSP screen, it would make it a lot easier for the players if they had at least a narrator in charge of the missions briefings and debriefings. As for the game's music, I know I sound like a broken record by now but the music is just not impressive. Even the music is all instrumental. This has to be one of the very few games to come out recently to not use a single voice.
