The drive is a standard 5.25” drive with dimensions of 145 mm for the
width, 41.3 mm for the Height and 170mm for the Depth. It fit easily into a
5.25” drive bay of the Shark case I use in my gaming computer. Once I
inserted the drive into the bay and attached the IDE cable and power cable,
I turned on the computer. Windows XP correctly identified the drive. I proceeded
to install Nero and PowerDVD 5 and setup was complete.
I.B.S stands for Intelligent Burn Superlink. This prevents under buffer run
errors. i-Burn is Gigabyte’s trademark for auto-detecting the best speed
for burning discs. i-Speed automatically detects the optimal read speed of the
drive. One thing that bothers me about some drives is the noise some makes when
reading the disc. VBS stands for Vibration Reduction System. Vibration causes
noise in disc drives. Gigabyte says that you can mount the discs either horizontally
or vertically.
Maximum write speed on the drive is 16x whether using + or – media. I
haven’t seen any 16x DVD writeable media available at Best Buy or Fry’s.
Gigabyte’s drive can do dual-layer discs at 4x speed. Read speeds are
typical of DVD drives today maximum of 16x speed. The Gigabyte DVD drive can
read every available CD or DVD media on the market at the moment. The GO-W1616A
has a 2MB cache, typical of DVD rewriter drives.
