Asus always includes a generous bundle with their deluxe motherboards and the P5K Deluxe Wi-Fi AP is no exception to this rule. 6 SATA cables are useful to every user, as that means you don’t need additional purchase to fully utilize the ports on the board. An IDE cable and a FDD cable round out the cables included. A 2-port USB/1 port Firewire bracket brings the total on the board to 8 USB 2.0 ports and two Firewire ports.

Asus PC Probe is their Windows based hardware monitoring tool, very useful for any tweaker as it shows the various voltages and temperatures for the components of the board. Asus Update is a online tool to update the drivers and BIOS in Windows. Asus NOS is their Windows-based automatic overclocking utility. NOS can be set to overclock the system when the load demands it. There are four modes for this utility: Auto, Standard, Sensitive and Heavy. Of course manual overclocking will likely result in better overclocking, but the utility is useful for those wanting easy and automatic overclocking.

Q-Fan is Asus’s fan control utility in Windows. Controlling fan speeds is an easy process with a drop-down menu bringing up the choices Optimal, Silent or Performance. The three choices change the fan speed when thermal condition, low speed or maximum speed is required. For the manual overclocker in all of us, Asus includes the Ai Booster application. The Advanced button is where it’s at in terms of overclocking. CPU Frequency, CPU ratio and Memory Tab. Each setting is set by another drop down menu, allowing you to overclock your computer with ease.

The Wi-Fi AP antenna brings Wi-Fi Internet to the motherboard. To install it simply attach it to the Wi-Fi AP port on the rear panel I/O, install the drivers from the driver CD and reboot. In practice I was only able to get 36 Mbps connection between two Wi-Fi AP equipped Asus motherboards. Transferring a large file (a 600+ MB CD) averaged a little over 1.4MB/second. Wi-Fi AP is a cool concept, but still bogs the system down during transfer times. Walls can be a big problem for Wi-Fi connectivity and the more of them between you and your router may cause connection and/or transfer problems.
