The 7800GT is a worthy successor to the 6800GT for the $399 MSRP from last year. At the moment, a 7800GT outperforms the competition at the same price point, has more features, and is widely available. The XFX card brings to the table factory overclocked core and memory speeds (450MHz/1.05GHz), good overclocking (505MHz/1.15GHz) and an excellent bundle.

Having said all of that, the current choice of the 7800GT or 7800GTX comes down to budget and the current system. The 7800GTX is an excellent card, don’t get me wrong, but the performance difference between a stock 7800GTX and XFX’s 7800GT is not worth the extra $100 such a purchase would entail. It’s clear that unless you have a high-end monitor capable of 2048x1536, the 7800GT or GTX would be CPU limited in many cases.

We’re literally less than 2 weeks from the launch of ATI’s next generation video card, the R520 series. Rumors place this chip as a Shader Model 3.0 part, with a new memory controller and many other features. However, I never recommend a product that hasn’t been announced yet. You can always wait for the “next best thing”. For now, the 7800GT and GTX in single or SLI mode are the fastest available solutions on the market.
