For the most part, I have a tendency to stay away from products that I would consider gimmicky. I was then shown these two devices from kontrolfreek.com. By looking at the website, I thought that this would be a cheesy product that would not help my gaming in the least. Well now I understand why they say “ you don’t know if you don’t try it”.
After skepticism went to the wayside, I decided to give the products some testing. There were two products that I got my hands on; the FPSFREEK and the SPEED FREEK. The FPSFREEK is designed for those first person shooter games that everyone seems to love. Well everyone except me, but that has little to do with this product and more with my preference for games. The website claims that the FPSFREEK will help increase the accuracy in first person shooter titles.
After opening the product, you install the extension onto any Xbox 360 or PS3 controllers. The FPSFREEK snaps on easier and makes the main analog controls taller. This helps with accuracy by reducing the distance that the analog stick has to move. Essentially giving the gamer more levels of movement in all directions, the unit helps the gamer by making smaller movements more detected by the control. Making the stick longer does make the accuracy of movement and aiming much better. For those with larger hands, the FPSFREEK will allow for a more comfortable grip on a PS3 controller. For me this helped considerably as the size of the PS3 has always been a hindrance for me. I prefer the slightly larger layout of the XBOX 360 controller as it fits my hands better. Adding the FPSFREEK to the Xbox controller did make Call of Duty much easier to play and more comfortable. Needless to say for something that looks like a piece of plastic, it actually provides greater accuracy as stated and will aid in taking strain of your hands for some games.
Then it was my chance to try the SPEEDFREEK. Kontrolfreek.com claims this unit will give the user a competitive edge and allow for more precise handling in racing and aviation games. Again these add-ons are used for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. After playing numerous hours of the new Need for Speed Shift on the 360 without this adapter, I decided to compare my performance with the use of the SPEEDFREEK. Talk about being surprised. WOW does not even cover it. Kontrolfreek.com does state that it will cut seconds off lap times. They are not kidding. I went from winning races by milliseconds to winning races by 10+ seconds. It helped improve my cornering and times. It even allowed me to lap some cars in some races. I blew thru the first two tiers of races completing all with all stars in less then 2 hours. I would say this is a great addition for any fan of the racing genre. Wait, I take that back, this is a must.
Overall I was impressed with both sets of add-ons. I normally do not mess around with this type of stuff but I am glad I found this little add-on. Watch out NFS freaks. More precise control has arrived and kudos to the developers at kontrolfreek.com for coming out with a very innovative and inexpensive gamer add-on. |
