When playing in single player, as with any of the Rainbow Six games, there's more than just storyline mode. There's also the Terrorist Hunt mode, so we'll be
touching on both here.
Our first stop, however, is going to be the first place the game takes you, character creation. The character creation is very similar to the last game, with
the major difference being that this time you can be a female. Other than that, expect the same as the last game.
They've added a ranking system, giving you unlocks as you advance in ranks. The system is very similar to the one Call of Duty 4 uses, except you can advance
both in single and multiplayer.
As you gain ranks, you'll gain access to new weapons, and sometimes just a chunk of experience. There are different ways to gain different bonuses by killing
enemies in certain ways. These will gain you even more unlocks and experience as you play.
One thing I have heard some people complain about from the first game was your squad's AI. A lot of times, your squad would be somewhere between stupid and
suicidal. This time around they react far better to your commands, and are smart enough to take two steps to the side to avoid gunfire as well.
The pace of this game can be a bit slower than other shooters like Call of Duty or even Halo, but this is a tactical FPS. You'll advance through the game
using the cover system a lot. Nothing has really changed about how this works at all, and it's still just as easy to do.
All of this seems to pivot around the storyline, so pay attention what's going on as you play. This is definitely a shooter where story is important. Don't
expect a story line Bioshock or anything, but still expect a solidly written storyline with a good amount of familiar faces appearing as well.
When not playing story mode, there's the Terrorist Hunt mode. This mode is great when you want to play a little single player Vegas 2, but don't quite want
to commit to the storyline, or are perhaps just stuck and need a break from the main story.
In Terrorist Hunt mode, the levels are decently small and contained. You'll get to choose the level you play, and there's no particular order. There's a good
variations of maps and locations to give you a fun time.
When setting up a map for this, you can choose difficulty of the enemy AI and how many enemies are in the level. Although you can't choose an exact amount of
enemies, the three different ranges seem well balanced, as do the difficulty levels. Lastly you'll be able to choose your loadout, and whether or not you
want a squad with you. Sometimes a quick Lone Wolf run can be fun, if you can survive.
