World War II has been exploited on just about every front and on just about every system with the possible exception of the Wii (of the top of my head I can’t think of a single WWII title on Nintendo Wii).

The shooter and the RTS genre have been the most popular platforms when dealing with World War II, but the miseries of 1939 to 1945 have gone as far as to even include Role Playing Games. Let’s face it! War sells, and there’s no war like World War II; at least not yet, and hopefully it will never be another war of the same magnitude.

There is a good reason why WWII sells so well. While we were growing up our parents and our teachers have bombarded us with history lessons. “Those who don’t understand history are bound to repeat it.” There is another reason for the popularity of WWII in entertainment: Hollywood. Movies like Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor, Enemy at the Gates and even Das Boot have shown us the horrors and beauty of war. I will not talk about the horrors of war; they are too many to fit in the space allocated for this review. I will however take a few lines to talk about the good lessons that can be learned from war. Loyalty, sacrifice, friendship, dedication and unity are some of the words that have real meaning to all the souls lost for a cause - our freedom today. When I play a WWII game I don’t look at it as exploiting our heroes; I look at it as giving them homage. Whether it is in a book, a film or even a video game, our heroes deserve the spotlight. It is our duty to remember them, and if we can have some fun and be entertained while doing it, I say that’s even better. So without any further delay, I give you the review for Activision’s Call of Duty – World at War.
