As a reviewer, I prefer clear cut games; either good or bad. Those games are easy to review, and the reader gets a clear cut idea if the game is worth a
purchase or not.
As my luck goes lately, once again, Iron Man happens to be one of those games that is filled with an equal amount of good and bad qualities. I will try to
present all qualities, good or bad, and let the hard decision of a purchase fall on the readers.
For the purpose of this review, I will cover sound first; it is less confusing and much better done than the game's graphics. First of all, the main reason
why the sound was excellent was the simple fact that they actually got the actors from the movie to do the game's voices.
Not only does Robert Downey Jr. sound like Robert Downey Jr., but the script, even though it is noticeably cheesier than the movie (which I thought was
great), is well written by video game standards. The game did not cheap out and only hire Iron Man for the voices, but the voices of Gwyneth Paltrow and
Jeff Bridges are also present. Jarvis, Tony's clever AI unit is also present, but honestly, I can't tell if it is done with the same voice from the movie.
When it comes to the sound effects, Iron Man takes a small hit; the game is not bad per se, it has explosions, gun fire, helicopters, etc., but at the same
time, it's nothing spectacular. I know that machine gun fire sounds about the same from game to game, but honestly, in this game, it could have been just a
bit crisper. The voices of the bad guys sound creepy and not very actor like, but I think, in all honesty, that the game is purposely done that way since
it obviously caters to children and not adults. Besides that, I have no real complaints when it comes to Iron Man's sound.
Iron Man's graphics, on the other hand, are a combination between two opposite extremes: terrible and great.
Sound confusing? Well, it is. I'm not going to beat around the bush; the game's graphics are terrible. The best aspects to the graphics are the different
iron man suits, and even the suits are poorly done. The only suit that looks good is the one done in red and gold.
The enemies are poorly rendered, and the vehicles are even worse. The vehicles are so badly rendered that it almost reminds me of games released over ten
years ago. For example, the tanks you encounter are basically some rectangular polygons with a turning turret. If this game had not been designed for
kids, the graphics would make me weep.
Iron Man's gadgets and weaponry, are just as poorly done as the rest of the game, but kids won't really care what it looks like as long as they're flying
around like Iron Man. Honestly, if any adult ends up being impressed with the PSP graphics of Iron Man, odds are that they've been locked up in a cave for
most of their life. You're probably thinking that I forgot about the good graphics featured in Iron Man; I did not.
The cut scenes between missions are some of the best rendered cut scenes associated to a PSP game. It actually amazes me that the cut scenes are part of
the same product. Without exaggerating, the word that comes to mind is WOW. Robert, Jeff and Gwyneth are perfectly rendered. What makes the cut scenes
this fantastic is a combination between both the graphics and the sound. It is the cut scenes in between the missions that justify playing this game as an
adult.
