When it comes to gameplay and controls, the strength of Final Fantasy Crisis Core can easily be debated.
All the veterans of Final Fantasy VII will be in shock when they first play through Crisis Core. The only real links between FF VII and Final Fantasy Crisis
Core is the storyline and the materia. The controls and the gameplay are completely different.
Returning fans will notice that the turn-based system has been replaced a real time combat system. As much as the game does not compare to Morrowind or
Oblivion, think of the new gameplay system somewhat similar to them. Zack, (you) has to rely on quick thinking and fast reflexes (button mashing) in order
to conquer his (your) enemies.
Unlike FF VII, now you have to do everything yourself. Blocking, dodging, attacking with either spells or sword are all done in real time. Because of this
feature, a lot of the combat scenes seem like little strategy and more button mashing techniques. However, as you progress throughout the game, button
mashing becomes less of an option. On hard fights strategy actually plays a role. Deciding when to block, when to heal, when to retreat and what gear to
use eventually become a key factor to your survival.
I almost feel like a traitor to the Final Fantasy VII legacy for saying this, but the more I play through Crisis Core, the more I understand why the game was
designed this way. First of all, I want to mention that in no way I think that Crisis Core is better than FF VII. However, to fully appreciate the beauty
of Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy Crisis Core had to be done this way. This is Zack's story and this story is all about his perspective. While the game
is lacking by comparison to FF VII in the gameplay department, it only paves ways for a new release of this great classic. After all, Crisis Core was
released on the 10th year anniversary of Final Fantasy VII. But before I get any further off target, let me just say that the way this game was designed, it
works. If you are a veteran of FF VII, it will take quiet a bit of time to adjust though.
