Saving the world is not an easy task and in Dragonball Evolution, justice is served with one punch at a time (possibly kick).
Depending on the difficulty level selected, fighting in Dragonball Evolution can be either based on skill or on button mashing. Yes, you can get away with mashing buttons on the easiest setting, but once you up the difficulty level, button mashing will not get you very far.
There are basically three main type of attacks in this game; Rush Attack is the fastest and the weakest attack, Smash Attack is a much slower but more devastating attack and it can also be charged up by holding down the Smash Attack button (the triangle button by default). The Special Attack is a bit deceiving in name. It is indeed a much stronger attack but it is not the ultimate attack. The ultimate attack takes five full bars of Ki before it can be initialized. Ki is the strong energy force found within and learning how to manage your Ki efficiently can be the difference between success and failure.
The ability to block attacks is also included in the game, but unlike any other fighting game that I have seen, in Dragonball Evolution, blocking actually works a bit differently. Each fighter actually has a block-bar that actually depletes as blocks are ongoing. So, unlike in many of the current fighting games, in this game you have to manage your attacks as well as your blocks with great care. The game actually scores your fights on three levels: fighting style, your leftover health at the end of the fight and the time that it took your to finish off your opponent. The highest possible grade is an S. If you can get an A or better in all the storyline fights you get to unlock a special opponent. I'm still working on this part. While I have not gotten a single C or anything lower, I do have a couple of B's; I guess I'm not going to be valedictorian. Completing the storyline unlocks a new game made, the Survival Mode. In addition to the Storyline and Survival mode, the game has an Arcade mode, Network Battles, Training and a Mission mode. One last thing that I want to mention in this section of the review is in relation to the Storyline Mode. Completing the storyline once actually opens up a slightly different version of the story where additional battles take place. So if you want to truly complete and enjoy the story, I would strongly suggest playing through it at least twice.
