Since I left off the last paragraph with the lack of playability because of the camera controls I feel it necessary to continue on that subject first.
Star Wars – The Force Unleashed is a very fast paced game. Your character does not get to use the long range pulse rifles along with some other long ranged weapons used against you, so your speed, quickness and reaction time are the necessary tools for your character to strive. Unfortunately, the lack of camera controls makes this task really hard to accomplish. The game is played in third person view with the camera following the character around and self-rotating in order to always face what the character is facing. In theory that is not a bad feature, but the camera rotates sooooooo slow that the only time the camera actually points where you’re going is when there’s no fighting on the screen and you’re either standing still or moving forward. In the game’s defense they did add a target enemy camera feature that you can lock the camera on to (which sometimes works great on a solo boss fight), but most of the fighting in this game involves you taking on a huge group of enemies and in that situation targeting just one enemy makes it actually harder. This game could have been the best Star Wars game ever it had decent camera controls.
The rest of the game from a gameplay and controls perspective works great. The buttons are very responsive, the combo hits are challenging enough to make the game fun but they are not impossible to pull off, and there is an awesome array of force powers and skills that can be used and trained up for maximum efficiency. Even the look and abilities of your light-saber can be adjusted; not only can you change the color of the light-saber, but you can also change the crystals from which it is made with different crystals boosting certain Jedi abilities. For example, one crystal boosts up your force-lightning skill while other crystals boost saber damage, force-choke or even force-push. From that perspective, Star Wars – The Force Unleashed is rather impressive. Most objects in the environments can be moved using the force and if your aim is accurate you can chunk all kind of objects at your enemies. You can even hurl an enemy at another enemy or a group of enemies. Personally, I think it is very funny and I get a kick out of chunking people around, but lately I’ve grown very fond of the force-choke and lightning skills. And if battling your way in a galaxy far, far away is not enough for you, you can always take your fighting to the battle arenas, but I would strongly suggest playing through the storyline first. In the arena the only force skills that you have are the ones unlocked in the storyline mode. The Arena is also the perfect place to practice fighting other Jedi (the real true challenge when it comes to the enemies in this game).
