Not only do I feel like I’m going insane (the force must be strong with me), but I think I’m driving everyone else insane with my constant humming of Star Wars music.
As far as I’m concerned I would have to say that the sound in George Lucas Star Wars – The Force Unleashed is perfect. The voice acting was done superbly. As a matter of fact, in my personal opinion some of the voice acting in this game is better than some of the acting in the actual movies. It is just too bad that they could not find the actors in time for the films.
As for the rest of the sounds they are the traditional and typical sounds found in every Star Wars film and just about every other Star Wars game. I would go as far as to say that I seriously doubt it that they took the time to re-record all the laser sounds, the Wookie screams, the sounds of clashing light-sabers, explosions and even the music. I’m a fan of the “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” statement and I think that Lucas is also a fan. Just because the light saber battles sound the same that they did in 1978, it does not make this game any less noteworthy in the sound department. The voice acting is new and well done, and mixed with all the old-school sounds, Star Wars - The Force Unleashed sounds great.
I wish I could say the same thing about the game’s graphics, but since there is no Jedi here to wave his hand and say: “This game looks perfect” I’m stuck speaking my mind off.
The movie files look great, but even they are not perfect. It seems that the rendering on some of the characters is done more meticulously than on others, but as in general the movie files look pretty good. The action also looks pretty good; the lasers look right as do the light-sabers. The explosions explode correctly and the people, animals, robots and vehicles have animations with a good flow to them.
Where the graphics really take a bad hit in this game is actually in the camera controls. The PSP with its limited button array does not allow the game to manually rotate the camera around. While the camera controls hinder the visual aspect of the game some, from a graphics perspective it is somewhat of a drawback, but it is not that big of a deal. However, the lack of camera controls hinders the gameplay performance of this game tremendously; the next section of the review will cover the gameplay and controls of the game and how the lack of camera movement makes this game almost unplayable.
