Turok looks great and sounds great. On top of just having great sound and graphics, Touchstone did an excellent job of blending the two for an outstanding final product.
To compliment a well-written script, the voice actors did an excellent job of expressing themselves. The acting and the script remained constant and solid throughout the game. The music was also done right, with both slow and fast melodies in the appropriate places. The faster the song, the more action is bound to be coming your way.
The sound effects are also done well, with guns and explosions sounding great, but my absolute favorite part of the sound is the dinosaur sounds. The sounds coming out of the dinosaur infested jungle mixed with the music give me the chills. The sound of fast footsteps can indicate an approaching predator, so sound is a major factor of Touchstone's new release, Turok.
For the most part, Turok's graphics are excellent. Since the theme of the game revolves around dinosaurs and their habitat (dense jungles), it is obvious that Touchstone put a lot more time in those aspects of the game.
The jungle maps are beyond excellent; the terrain is rendered beautifully and to match the beauty of the terrain, Touchstone rendered a vast amount of diverse dinosaurs from the peaceful herbivores to the evil carnivores that want nothing less then to make you their tasty supper.
When it comes to both the weapons and the player models I am torn between liking and disliking. Let me explain. For the most part, the Turok and the rest of the characters in the game are rendered superbly, but from time to time it seems that the programmers got lazy. For example, most of the time, the characters have individually rendered fingers that even have fingernails. Well, every once in a while, when the game thinks that you're not paying attention, will render just a stump holding on to a gun. Mostly that happens when you're busy with a firefight, but since this is my job, I pay attention to little things like that.
One aspect of the game that was a bit disappointing from start to finish was the games fire effects. Considering that the rest of the game is so solid, I find it interesting that such little time was placed on the fire. Fire is an important feature of the game; one of the weapons available to Turok is the flamethrower but unfortunately for us, it is also one of the worst looking weapons. Besides the fire cork and rendered stumps every once in a while, the game's graphics are perfect or very close to. However, where the strength of Turok really lies is in the way the programmers combined the graphics with the sound and the gameplay. Individually, neither of the features is perfect, but put together they form one of the best games that I've seen in a long time.
