This time around, the main character is changed, though it doesn't make a huge difference. You're part of a second F.E.A.R. team, First Encounter Assault Recon.
While the F.E.A.R. team is out on a mission a catastrophic disaster occurs, separating the parts of the team from one another. This leaves you with one other member of the team, at least when things start out.
You manage to make it underground, keeping you and your teammate safe. Well, at least it gives the appearance of safe. When things start out in this demo, you're knocked out cold, awakened by your teammate. You two decide it's time to find a way out of the underground, and start moving on.
As you make your way through the sewers, you'll first run into some standard soldiers. You'll recognize them from the first two installments of F.E.A.R. as soon as you see them. They're just like they were, talking to one another, radioing back and forth. They'll even yell a taunt or two at you as you pick them off one by one. There will also be a new enemy or two making an appearance to the series as well.
As you move a bit further on, you see her. F.E.A.R. players will instantly recognize the female this entire series has been built around. She just goes 'walking' by in front of you when you see her. I won't say her name and spoil it for those of you who haven't played the original game yet, which I highly recommend playing if you haven't.
At first she isn't aggressive, that all changes soon though. She finds her way into your head, as she has a way of doing, and starts to play games with you. She'll make you think you're trapped walking through the same room over and over, as it grows bloodier and more abstract each time you enter it, only to see the door fade away behind you.
Fans can also expect a new gun with this expansion, though you'll have to play the demo for yourself to see it. Another great thing some gamers will notice with this demo is full Logitech G15 keyboard support. There are still many games being released that do not have the support, let alone a demo. Props to the development team for including this when many game developers don't.
The game itself looks every bit as good as F.E.A.R. has in the past. While this game doesn't necessarily sport the best graphics around, they are still very nice to look at when playing this game. They also set the mood very well with the lighting, and their use of it. The creators of this franchise seem to know the perfect time to flicker those lights on and off to make you jump.
But making you jump and sending a chill down the spine is what this game is for, being a horror-themed FPS. If you are easily scared, or blood isn't something you look for in an FPS, then this won't be one for you. I know personally I am anxiously awaiting the release of this title so I can pick it up and see what else is in store. If it's as good as the last two parts, gamers will be in for a nice chilling game, start to finish.
