The demo for Bioshock became available on August 20th; a game that many gamers, console and PC alike, have been anxiously awaiting for some time now. I first heard
of this game at least a year ago, and what little I heard about it had me interested. I had this file downloading as soon as it was made available to get the
demo.
When the game starts off you are on a plane, but that doesn't last very long. The year is 1960. Soon your plane goes crashing down into the ocean, right near an
odd tower. When this happened I was simply amazed by the look of the graphics all around, the way the wreckage of the plane burned atop some of, if not the best water
I have seen in a game. As I swam to shore I took my time, taking in the water as best I could, but it's hard to see across the ocean at night
Soon I was entering this tower on the island, and the power seemed to always be one step ahead of me in turning on, like it knew I was coming. I move deeper into
this building, and approach an underwater elevator type system. Entering this and switching a lever promptly closes the door behind me and lowers me into the ocean. I
move deeper and deeper down, and then a video comes up on the wall of the elevator/submarine object.
The video is about a city, one I am entering, known as Rapture. Rapture is a city supposedly offering a 'better life' for those who live there on the bottom of the
ocean. These illusions of peace are quickly broken upon entering the city, but I'll let you see that for yourself in the demo.
Screenshots will not be able to do justice to how this game looks when you are actually in the game; again this is something you'll have to see for yourself. I
will say, however, that the graphics optimization is wonderful. I experienced no lag whatsoever at any point during the demo with all the setting maxed out. DirectX
10 users will be in for a real treat with this game.
This game is one not to be missed by fans of FPS games. Great graphics, great controls, and even the demo offers up some cool ways to kill your enemies, such as
electrocution and fire. The setting offers a very creepy feel, such as games like FEAR, but also sets it in an alternate past. The only complaint I have about the
demo is it was so short, leaves me wanting more. But then again, that is exactly what a demo is supposed to do, and this one does it very well. I can't wait to play
the final game.
