SpaceForce: Rogue Universe offers the player two types of game modes. One mode is the storyline mode while the second mode is a total "free-roaming, create your own adventure" type.
Free-mode:
The Free-mode career option is exactly just as it says. Unlike in the storyline mode where you are stuck playing a human in search for his sister, in the free-mode you actually get to pick your alien race, your profession, and your portrait.
Once you've picked your race, profession and portrait it's time to hit the streets (in this case empty space). Assuming that you've already set up your controls, now it is time to pull up to a space station. The space stations are where all the magic happens.
Want to purchase a new ship - go to a space station. Need repairs or upgrades? Once again the space station is where you can do that. Need to refit missiles on your craft? Try the space station. Need some kind of mission or assignment? Well sure enough, it's at a space station here
all of that happens.
Well you're probably familiar to how space stations work now, so it's time to move on. SpaceForce offers a large assortment of missions that you can embark on. Doing missions for a particular race will raise your diplomacy level with that particular alien group.
When it comes to diplomacy, if your relation is at 20 or lower, that particular race will attack you each time they see you. On the other hand, if your diplomacy rating is very high, you can literarily get away with murder (and depending on the mission you might just have to).
When it comes to the missions, while the particular story and names may be different each time, a lot of the missions are the same. For instance
"Fight off the attackers" missions: the name of the bandit may change, the solar system may not be the same, and the alien race you fight may be different, but the mission is the same - find the bad guys and take them out.
Never less, there is a good variety of mission types; seek & destroy, spy, hack, escort, cargo intercept, cargo run, satellite set/destroy, and
assassinate missions are some of the 2000+ missions available in the "free-roam" mode of the game.
Storyline Mode:
SpaceForce: Rogue Universe also has a storyline mode for the players who prefer someone else's story instead of just creating one. The story is not bad per say, it is just not that original in the world of SCI-FI. Since it's just a video game and not some fancy Hollywood movie, the story actually works well.
Aliens invade. A pilot and a father of two goes off to fight the advancing aliens. This brave soldier dies leaving behind two orphans. Now, twenty years later you (the orphan boy left behind) want to follow in your dad's footsteps and become a fighter pilot as well.
Not only that, but if you follow the storyline you get to search, and possibly even find your sister. Not to trash-talk the storyline, but this game finally gave us a chance to just roam around and do our own thing without strings attached, so come on... leave the storyline behind and just enjoy the free-mode where you create your own adventures.
