In the beginning there was Driver and Grand Theft Auto. Driver had the better driving engine while Grand Theft Auto’s engine focused mostly on violence, chaos and an interactive world on foot as well as behind the wheel.

As the years went by and sequels were released, Grand Theft Auto continued to focus on what made the series popular: violence. Not wanting to be left behind in the dust, Driver finally introduced the “on foot” perspective to its series while still focusing on the driving aspect of the game for the most part. The result was a total nightmare.

Driver 2 was bad, Driv3r aka Driver 3 was so terrible that I actually gave away my copy to a friend (we’re no longer friends so I wonder if the gift had something to do with that), and now we have the 4th installment of this franchise who is simply named Driver – Parallel Lines. Whether this latest Driver is a hit or a bust only time and of course us – the players will tell. Two things are for certain though: 1 – Driver switched publishers from Atari to Ubisoft and 2 – the main character is no longer a cop but a criminal instead.
