Perhaps one of the strongest ties to past experiences in the realm of gamers and geeks alike is the feeling of another title in a series that has long been going by. Take titles such as Quake, Doom, Leisure Suit Larry, Half Life, Age of Empires and Civilization – while not all of these are ancient, we can identify with them being bleeding edge, and something new and incredible for their time. We can remember that feeling too for every time another iteration hit the shelves, but also we remember the surges and falls, as features were found, while lost ones were lamented. As such, we come to Civilization 4 today. Bringing to a head a long running series which many of us have dabbled in over the years, this game promises a bigger and better world, more diversified technology, and a general interface facelift. The question on everybody’s mind however, is will it be enough to make the title stand out and be something special, or just enough that it’ll end up being held onto by fans of the series and none others. Bearing that in mind, it’s time to see what’s been done to the series as the years have passed.
