The
clock strikes midnight, and a shadow seems to shift; a wary guard casts a glance
over, yet sees nothing. Soon, the shadow moves again and a torch goes
out… A moment later, there is a scream in the night as the guard falls
dead… the shadow shifts yet again, and a guard turns… when his gaze
returns to the treasure he is sworn to keep… it has disappeared. Such is
the work of the thief. Thief 3: Deadly Shadows is the third title in the Thief
trilogy (so to speak), and it follows in the footsteps of its predecessors rather
well. The elements of first and third person action are still here, along with
an intuitive stealth and combat system, as well as an innovative new way to open
doors that you really aren’t supposed to be going through. Essentially,
what this title represents is the evolution of a unique title in a genre yet
again; a blend of old perfections and new ideals. Like many titles this year,
Thief 3 seems to try to re-define its genre, bending it with new ideals, and
surprisingly, sometimes succeeds. Yet, will the whole game be this good, or
will it turn out to be a few decent pieces in a horrible puzzle. Read on to
find out.
