The best part of the storyline takes place in the very first few minutes once the game starts. You find yourself in the middle of a firefight with everyone shouting orders at you in Russian. At first I was like WTF? I'm a bit rusty on this game and they just throw me in the middle of a fight without even telling me what side I'm on, but as it turns out, the opening sequence is just a daydream. Bohemia Interactive pulled this part off really well.

However, sadly enough, that was the best part to the storyline. And it wasn't the best part of the story because the actual story is bad. On the contrary, the dialogue is written well, the idea is good; it is original, intriguing but none of that matters to the game because the game engine was not designed to respond and handle the game in the way that Bohemia Interactive took it. If you can imagine a modern day military version of Bethesda's Oblivion or Morrowind is how the story was presented in this game.

Once your character snaps out of his little daydream, you find yourself on the deck of an aircraft carrier listening to a speech given by your commanding officer. You're not a Russian after all but an American soldier part of a recon team named Razor. Without spoiling the story, I just want to say that your team really has to recon. You have to go all over the map finding and talking with people, helping the locals out and trying to uncover the hidden location of the enemy. As I've said, in theory that actually sounds fun and entertaining but the way the ARMA 2 engine works, advancing through the official story almost ruined the entire game for me. The mission editor is where the real story takes place for me. In the mission editor I can create whatever story I want. I can defend or I can attack, I decide the forces present, I chose the equipment and I chose if I wan to create a single player or a multiplayer mission. It is the mission editor tat saved this game a few points on the final score.
