Goo rhymes with poo and poo sounds like shit. If you're expecting me to say that World of Goo sounds crappy, then you're only half right.
But, how do you define quality when it comes to video games. Big publishers like EA or Ubisoft have the necessary funds to incorporate state of the art graphics and celebrity voice acting on many of their titles. But that only makes the sound, the graphics state of the art, and as all real gamers know, a great game is not as much about sound or graphics as it is about the concept, the content, the gameplay and the controls.
If we are to compare this game's sounds and graphics with games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Fallout 3 or even Assassins Creed, then World of Goo is a terrible game, but if we are to look at the overall idea of the game, World of Goo could not have been done any better. First of all, the game is made by 2-D Boy and that alone should hint to you that you're not going to find 3-D graphics in this title. Also, considering that the foundation of this game revolves around physics and goo balls, you should not expect too much out of the sound either.
And if your expectations are not high, this game delivers. The world created by 2-D Boy for this game might only be 2-D but that does not meant that it is not a beautifully designed game. The artwork is beautiful; it is very cartoonish and very colorful but it fits perfect with the theme of the game. There are a variety of goo balls that look striking. Despite that they are all round; they each have their own traits and looks to them. There are gray balls, white balls, black balls, clear rain drop-like balls, giant balls that need to be shattered into many tiny balls and there's even green goo balls that remind me of isotopes in the sense that they are very unstable. The backgrounds are great looking for two reasons: the look of the backgrounds themselves as well as the clever design of the levels (as you will read in the 'Gameplay and Controls' section of the review, the level's background actually forms the level itself. Now, when it comes to sounds, there is some background music (with no lyrics) and there are some sound effects such as squeaks, beeps, clicks, bangs and thuds along with some other goo ball sound effects that I'm not even going to try to translate into words. As I said, if we are going to compare World of Goo with a high-budget release, World of Goo sucks, but if we are to look at the game for what it is, the sounds and the game's graphics are perfect.
