If you are expecting the RPG type of game where you and your comrades run around the world map and quest against terrible monsters and supernatural foes, you will be greatly disappointed.
Disciple focuses on PVP (Player vs. Player). After playing 6 years of Shadowbane, I live for PVP and I'm glad to see a game that focuses entirely on this feature. Even the quests that you undertake are based around duels between disciples, with one major difference. The characters that you have to face in many of the quest are NPC (Non-Player Characters). But, some of the quests do send you against other human opponents. For example, one of the quests sends you out to battle 4 Ashasians. Here's where you have a choice. You can either find some Ashasians NPCs to duel, or if you feel brave enough, you can challenge other Ashasians players to a PVP battle.
Disciple includes two ways of fighting. Battles are ranked fights while Spars are fights that are not ranked. If you're new to the game or if you just want some practice against a certain race or class sparring is your best bet as for the battles, win or lose, a record is kept of your performance. One of the impressive features found in this game is that experience and gold is awarded regardless of winning or loosing the fight. Of course, winning grants you much more experience and gold. Experiences are necessary for your character to advance in levels while gold is necessary for upgrading your weapons and armor. If your funds permit, you can also purchase some potions that restore some of your health. Another thing that I appreciate about this game is the ability to play it with just the mouse. This way, you can lean your chair back, put your feet up on the desk, relax, and just click your way to victory or defeat.
By now, you're probably wondering where the catch is. If you're waiting for me to say that the game is full of pop-ups and advertisements you're gonna wait a very long time because there aren't any. There is a catch though. The map is divided into 4 sections: the three main ones are in relation with the deities; one section for each God. The 4th and smallest section of the map is named Ally. Ally is accessible to only the people who pay a small monthly fee of $5.95. A three month membership is $16.35, a six month membership is $29.95 or if you would like to pay for the entire year, your cost will only be $44.95. You're probably thinking "great... if I want to be competitive in the game I'll have to pay the fees." But that's not the case. While you do get access to slightly better gear if you join Ally Nations, the way that you created and the way that you play your character greatly determines your chance of victory or defeat. Three attributes determine much of your character's statistics: body, mind and spirit. For example, to increase health, passion, attack power and resistance, you will want to raise your 'body' attributes. Spirit affects your regeneration, health, evade and the chance to deliver a critical hit. How you balance your attributes determines your unique play style. As your character gains levels new attribute points are made available for you to distribute as well as new skills. Also, if you find yourself short on geloors (the game's currency) you can purchase a limited sum using real money. The amount of geloors that can be purchased is limited thus ensuring a balance to the game's economy.
