I've played some terrible games when it comes to gameplay and controls, and while Rise of the Argonauts is not terrible it most certainly is bad.
There are two ways to play Rise of the Argonauts; with a keyboard and mouse or with a game controller such as the Xbox360 controller for Windows. Either way you go the gameplay and the controls are both good and bad.
The good aspect of the controls is that the way exactly how the programmers intended for them to work. Movement works great, camera controls work equally good. The buttons respond timely and even if you take the default controls you should get accustomed to the way the this game handles in no time whatsoever.
The problem with the gameplay and the controls is that Rise of the Argonauts was designed as a complete button masher game. While there is some strategy and there are god powers that are unique and help out Jason and the Argonauts in a time of need, at the same time all you have to do is equip the mace and just click the power swing button over and over again until all the enemies drop. Every once in a while you may need to use your shield or dodge but most of the time the little strategy that this game can implement has value only against boss fights. And the boss fights are not even that fluid; once you memorize the pattern you can take out a boss very quickly.
I want to take a moment to talk about the gods, the god powers and how speech can affect both. I've mentioned in the sound section of this review that Jason has a lot of choices when it comes to the things that he says. Most of the time, each particular statement made by Jason can go one of four ways; each choice pleases one of the gods. The four Olympians that guide Jason in his travels are Ares, Athena, Hermes and Apollo. Completed quests can also be dedicated to the gods for an increase of experience with that particular god. Earn enough exp points and fill the god's meter and you earn one ability point that can be spend on a god power. God powers range from permanent and automatically activated to player activated powers. Powers such as increase of spear damage are constant but powers such as leaving behind a decoy when you dodge have to be activated by the player. Even though the god powers sound great on paper, as long as you stick to good old fashion button mashing you will hardly need to use them.
