On a few rare occasions there are some games that offer more out of the sound than the graphics. Rise of the Argonauts is one of those games. Actually, in Rise of the Argonauts the sound is much more superior compared to the graphics.
From the very beginning of the game until the very end the game is filled with voice acting; good voice acting. The script itself was also written well. The lines read by each character actually matched their persona. Jason was created as the wisest; he also has great patience which is revealed through the dialogue as well as the voice acting. Hercules is the dumb brute. Achilles sounds all high on himself all the time and Atlanta sounds like an angry, angry chick. The voice acting and the script is right on the money.
The game's music is nothing impressive. You're either going to like it or you're not; it all depends on your music tastes. Not that music really matters. Most of this game revolves around the dialogues and the sounds of battle. The sounds of battle are probably the weakest aspect of the sound. Most of the hits that you're going to hear is going to be the sound of metal hitting more metal. But the most interesting aspect of the sound is found in combination between the dialogue (voice acting) and the gameplay. Throughout the game there will be many opportunities for Jason to chose what he says. Depending of the choice made that not only does it make Jason's dialogue turn a certain direction, but it also affects your standings with the gods. Speech and the gods will be discussed in detail in the gameplay and controls section of the review.
The game's graphics are yesterday's technology. There is absolutely nothing new in this game visually speaking. Everything you see in Rise of the Argonauts you have seen in other video games. Jason is the best rendered character. The female character are done fairly well also, but the male characters are somewhat blocky and poor Pan looks like a goat rendered by child. Another thing that I want to mention about the female characters is the fact that the programmers seem to have only used one or maybe two different renderings at best but as far as I'm concerned all the women in the game look the same. Hair color and outfits are the only difference. The environment, while decent looking looks like a cut and paste job; for some reason all the maps including the layouts, colors and textures remind me of other past games that I've played. But don't get me wrong; the game does not look bad at all. It just does not look spectacular. I'll let you be the judge; just take a look at the screenshots and you'll be able to determine the graphics quality for yourself. Another thing that I want to mention is that Rise of the Argonauts is played in third person view entirely; I know to some people that makes a difference. I only care when it comes to shooters.
