Red Alert 3 had a lot of potential but it almost seems like two different teams worked on this game. Parts of the game’s graphics and sound are done really well while other parts of the game seem to be just terrible.
While just about everyone in Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 is a somewhat famous actor either they did not take acting in a video game seriously or (and I hate to say this) are burned out on acting. Andrew Divoff stood out as the one taking his job seriously, and if he could have changed the Spanish accent to a Russian one his acting would have been perfect. The women in the game act and dress like prostitutes so it is impossible for me to take them seriously from a gaming perspective. But enough talk about the look and the sound of the actors; now it is time to see if the actual game has anything to offer.
Once again I am mesmerized by the difference in parts of the game. For instance the water, water effects, boats and just about anything to do with the water is done superbly. On the other hand, the land is not quiet as remarkable; actually it is rather disappointing. Not only are things on the land just a bit too cartoonish for my taste (especially after using real actors and real video footage for the movie files). On top of that, the destructible environment is poorly designed. For example a blown up building seems to break apart the way blocks of Lego come undone. It seems that the game has tried avoiding curved surfaces as much as possible. Actually, it seems that for the most part all the buildings are put together entirely by square and rectangle blocks. Even the game’s units seem to have been designed by different teams. The air as well as the naval units seem to be done fairly well, but the tanks and most other land units seem to just be moving blocks. It is the inconstancies that get to me the most. That’s why I hated group work in school; if one person slacks off it affects everyone’s grade and the same can be said about this game’s overall score. |
